Design

The Konica Genba Kantoku series was engineered for resilience, featuring a heavy-duty weather seal and construction described as extremely robust, weather-resistant, waterproof, and shockproof. The Genba Kantoku 28WB includes a textured rubber covering for improved grip and protection. These design elements reflect its purpose as a camera built to survive the rigors of industrial work sites.

Context

Introduced during a period when Japanese manufacturers were expanding into specialized consumer and professional tool markets, the Genba Kantoku series stood out as a purpose-built camera for workers in demanding environments. It was marketed not as a photographic enthusiast’s tool but as a durable, functional device for site documentation. The inclusion of a built-in voice memo system allowed users to record notes alongside images, enhancing its utility in professional settings. The original Genba Kantoku was replaced in 1993 by the New Genba Kantoku, which featured a 35mm lens, indicating an evolution in design focus while maintaining the rugged form factor.
