Overview

Identified as part of the first generation of A-type magazines, the A12 evolved from earlier designs like the Magazine 12, with improvements in loading and film tracking. Design

The "A" in A12 stands for "Automatic," reflecting its improved loading mechanism compared to earlier models. Starting in 1970, the A12 featured automatic stop loading—after threading the film and advancing it until the arrow aligns with the red triangle, turning the crank about 10 times stops automatically at frame "1." Later versions include a red progress bar to indicate film consumption and a fixed film reminder slot on top for inserting film box ends. The inserts are individually hand-calibrated to each magazine at the factory, and serial numbers must match between the magazine and insert for proper function.

Context

The A12 was the standard 120-film back for the Hasselblad V-System, part of a family that includes the A16, A24, and A32 magazines. While later models introduced features like darkslide holders (post-1994) and TCC variants with contrast dials, the core design remained compatible across decades. It was included in notable sets, such as the Hasselblad 500CM gold '1957-1987' edition, underscoring its role in professional and enthusiast workflows.

Market

Used A12 magazines have varied in price based on production year: approximately $200 for a 1968 model, $275 for a 1982 version, and $375 for a 1993 unit. One listing on eBay showed an asking price of approximately $179.72 or best offer. The A12 was listed as sold without price disclosure on Classic Connection, indicating ongoing collector interest.
