Canon EOS 5DS
A 50.6MP digital SLR designed for high-resolution still imaging in studio and field environments
Overview
The Canon EOS 5DS is a digital SLR camera built around a 50.6-megapixel full-frame sensor, making it one of Canon's highest-resolution cameras at launch in 2015. It was positioned alongside the 5D Mark III rather than replacing it, offering extreme resolution for specialized applications. The camera supports in-camera sharpening controls, easy crop modes, and flicker reduction for shooting under artificial lighting. It is used in fields ranging from landscape and portrait photography to forensic documentation and intelligence gathering, with reports of institutional deployment in fixed mounting setups.

Design
The EOS 5DS features a traditional anti-alias filter, distinguishing it from the 5DS R model, which cancels the effect of the filter for increased sharpness. Despite claims of enhanced detail from the R version, direct comparisons by users have found no significant visual difference between the two models beyond the EXIF tag identifying the camera used.
Context
At its 2015 launch, the EOS 5DS and 5DS R were the highest-resolution cameras ever made by Canon or Nikon. They were not intended as direct replacements for the 5D Mark III, but rather as high-resolution alternatives within the same product ecosystem. While the later 5D Mark IV offers higher speed, the 5DS models remain specialized tools for static subjects where maximum resolution is critical.
Market
As of July 2025, used prices for the EOS 5DS range from approximately $745 to $1,599, with the 5DS R typically commanding a premium of about $130 over the standard 5DS. Near Mint bodies have sold for C $1,422.65, while Excellent condition bodies have been listed at C $1,120.87. The R version carried a $200 premium at launch and continues to hold higher resale value.
