Design
The SS-125 uses an acoustic suspension cabinet design with a 45° inclined baffle plate to reduce standing waves and improve imaging. The crossover network incorporates air-core inductors and film capacitors for clean signal transmission.
Context
Sony developed the SS-125 to challenge dominant American speaker brands of the early 1980s, aiming to deliver a balanced, detailed sound that could stand alongside the best from AR, KLH, and Advent. It represented a significant step in Sony’s ambition to be taken seriously in high-fidelity audio.
Market
A recent eBay listing showed a pair selling for $450. Common issues include deteriorating foam surrounds on the woofers and aged capacitors in the crossover network, which may require replacement for optimal performance. Original drivers are difficult to source, making restoration of existing units essential.
