Sony ps-x55 (1980-1982)
A full-auto turntable with microcomputer-controlled operation and a rigid J-shaped tonearm for improved tracking.
Overview
The Sony PS-X55 is a fully automatic turntable produced from 1980 to 1982, designed for reliable and user-friendly playback. It features a built-in microcomputer that manages record size selection, automatic start, return, and repeat functions. Marketed as a "basic fully-automatic turntable for the masses," it shares specifications with the PS-LX5 but includes a heavier platter and larger motor. Its design emphasizes stability and precision, using advanced materials and construction techniques for its class.

Design
The PS-X55 uses a linear BSL motor that eliminates brushes and slots, reducing torque unevenness for quiet, smooth rotation. Speed detection employs Magnedisc with a crystal lock system for precise phase control. The tonearm features a rigid J-shaped aluminum alloy pipe with approximately eight times the stiffness of conventional designs, supported by a long-span bearing shaft for stability. End-of-record detection is contact-less, enhancing reliability. The cabinet is made from SBMC, an acoustic material resistant to resonance, and includes a thick dust cover and gel-damped insulators for improved vibration absorption. The microcomputer controls all automated functions, including read-in, return, and repeat playback.
Context
The PS-X55 shares features with the PS-X30 and matches the specifications of the PS-LX5, though it includes a heavier platter and larger motor. Positioned as an entry-level full-auto turntable, it was made just before the release of higher-end models like the PS-X600, PS-X700, and PS-X800. It is listed in Sony's brand index under "Legendary Products."
