Sony PS-LX2 (1981)
A fully automatic direct-drive turntable from Sony with precision servo-controlled motor and integrated MM cartridge system
Overview
The Sony PS-LX2 is a full auto-player turntable released in 1981, designed for effortless operation with complete automation including auto start, lead-in, and return. It was priced at ¥29,800 at launch and built around a direct-drive system using a linear BSL motor with servocontrol via magnedisk velocity detection, enabling high rotational stability. The unit features an integrated MM-type cartridge (XL-150) with a 0.6 mil-round diamond stylus and a straight tone arm optimized for light tracking force and high compliance.
Engineered for low resonance, the cabinet uses SBMC material known for high internal loss and rigidity. It includes an opto-electronic disc size selector that automatically distinguishes between 30 cm LP and 17 cm EP records, ensuring accurate tone arm positioning. A muting mechanism prevents playback noise during needle contact, enhancing user experience.

Design
The PS-LX2 uses a linear BSL motor with servocontrol by a magnedisk velocity detection system, applying micron-level measurement technology for precise speed control. The cabinet is constructed from SBMC material, selected for its excellent internal damping and structural strength to minimize resonance. It features a low-mass straight tone arm designed to work with lightweight, high-compliance cartridges under low needle pressure. An opto-electronic disc size selector automatically detects 30 cm LP or 17 cm EP records and guides the tone arm accurately. A muting mechanism eliminates contact noise when the stylus lands on the record, and an auto return function completes the fully automatic playback cycle.
