EMS Synthi A (1971)

A portable modular analog synthesizer produced by Electronic Music Studios (EMS) of England, first released in 1971.

Overview

The EMS Synthi A is a portable modular analog synthesizer made by Electronic Music Studios (EMS) of England. It debuted in May 1971 as a desktop, self-contained version of the earlier VCS3, and is distinct from the later Synthi AKS. This model features a matrix patching system and was designed for both studio and live use. One variant, the EMS Synthi A Mk2, follows the original 1971 design. The unit is monophonic and includes three voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), an input amplifier with microphone and line-level inputs, an envelope follower, spring reverb, stereo tape echo, and twin phasers. It is known for its meandering oscillators, filter, looping, and drifting characteristics. A 2011 and even a 2010 example were manufactured by EMS (Robin Wood), indicating limited new production decades after the original run.

Design

The Synthi A is in all original (unmodified) condition, with deep-cleaning performed on pots, sockets, and the matrix panel, which was flushed through during maintenance. The unit retains its original construction, including meandering oscillators, filter, spring reverb, stereo tape echo, twin phasers, and looping and drifting behaviors. It follows the original 1971 Mk2 design when newly produced.

Context

The EMS Synthi A was released in 1971, two years after the VCS3, and preceded the Synthi AKS (1972). It is a sibling model to the EMS Synthi 100 within the Vintage Technology Archive, though no direct technical lineage is stated. The Synthi A and Synthi 100 are both notable instruments in EMS's synthesizer innovation line.

Market

The Synthi A listed in 2022 sold for £12,990 GBP, while a Synthi A Mk2 sold in 2018 for £7,200 GBP. A full service by KSR was carried out in July 2019 on a different unit, and post-sale service including final check and calibration is standard. Packing, shipping, and insurance are not included in the sale price. Matrix pins are still available from EMS for around £260 GBP.
