ARP Solina String Ensemble SE-IV (1974–1981)

Analog string machine with divide-down oscillators, BBD chorus, and six voice switches, produced from 1974 to 1981.

Overview

The ARP Solina String Ensemble SE-IV is a string machine made in Bodegraven, Netherlands by Eminent B.V. and distributed in the US by ARP Instruments, Inc. It is one of four versions in the Solina String Ensemble line, produced between 1974 and 1981. The SE-IV features a 49-key full-size keyboard with synth action and delivers polyphonic string, brass, and bass tones using analog subtractive synthesis. The lower 20 keys produce monophonic cello and bass voices, while the upper range is fully polyphonic. It includes voice switches for Violin, Viola, Trumpet, Horn, Cello, and Contra-Bass, allowing timbral variety across its range.

Design

The ARP Solina String Ensemble SE-IV uses divide-down oscillator technology derived from the Eminent 310U organ and features bucket-brigade device (BBD) analog delays to create its signature triple-chorus effect. The SE-IV version includes flashy LEDs and a built-in chorus described as "pure analog alchemy." It generates a lush, shimmering wave of strings characterized as swirly, celestial, and ethereal. The unit has no storage memory and is designed for immediate performance use, offering instant access to its iconic sound.

Context

The Solina String Ensemble was originally created by Dutch organ maker Eminent BV in 1974 and licensed to ARP Instruments for US distribution. The SE-IV is one of four models in the Solina String Ensemble series, which includes the SE-I, SE-II, SE-III, and SE-IV. It is distinct from the rare ARP Solina String Synthesizer, a hybrid instrument combining the String Ensemble engine with the Explorer I synth.

Market

The ARP Solina String Ensemble SE-IV originally sold for approximately $995. Current market value is around $2,500 USD. Common service issues include power supply failures, faulty capacitors, degraded key contacts, and failing envelope capacitors in both bass and upper registers. Units are often serviced with rebuilt power supplies, capacitor replacements, and contact cleaning.
