Design
The Pentax K-1 introduced the first weather-resistant and backside-illuminated flexible tilt-type LCD monitor in a Pentax DSLR. Its body combines a magnesium-alloy shell with a stainless-steel chassis, sealed at 87 points to ensure dust and weather resistance. The camera omits an in-camera flash to maintain sealing integrity and features Hyper Manual mode, where a single button press sets shutter speed and ISO automatically.
Context
As the flagship model of the Pentax K-mount system, the K-1 marked Pentax’s long-awaited entry into the full-frame DSLR market. Despite its high-end positioning and outstanding DxOMark sensor score of 96 points, it launched at a relatively low list price compared to competitors, drawing attention for its rugged, no-nonsense design and strong value proposition.
Market
The Pentax K-1 had an original MSRP of $1,799.95. Forum users note its very solid build quality, and it has been described as the "Toyota Landcruiser of DSLRs" for its durability. While initially priced at $1,799.95, it was available at retail for $1,599.00 within months of release.
