Sony TC-K60 (1978–1981)

A front-loading stereo cassette deck with AMS sensing and dual-mode peak hold meters.

Overview

The Sony TC-K60 is a stereo cassette deck produced from 1978 to 1981 by Sony Corporation, Tokyo. It features an Automatic Music Sensor (AMS) function for track detection and includes a double-indication LCD peak program meter with Manual and Auto peak hold modes. Part of Sony’s TC-K series, the deck uses a single capstan drive system and a brushless, slotless BSL Green Motor derived from Sony turntable technology. It supports three tape types via a 3-position selector with independent bias and equalizer settings, and includes Dolby NR with an integrated MPX filter.

Design

The TC-K60 uses an F&F (ferrite & ferrite) record/playback head for long-term stability and employs a BSL Green Motor—a brushless, slotless linear motor originally developed for Sony turntables—to ensure smooth, quiet operation. The deck features an integrated-circuit microprocessor controlling the AMS (Automatic Music Sensor) function, with LCD peak meters driven by the CX-765 IC. Despite having only one motor, one capstan, and two heads, it retains mechanical transport keys and offers a rugged build.

Context

Marketed as a front-loading cassette deck with Dolby noise reduction, the TC-K60 was positioned in Sony’s TC-K series during the late 1970s. It did not achieve strong sales, being considered too expensive for most consumers while falling short of the semi-professional performance expected from three-head decks of the era.
