Sony ST-SA50ES (1997)
A high-fidelity FM/AM stereo tuner from Sony’s Elevated Standard (ES) series, released in 1997 with advanced reception circuitry and premium audio performance.
Overview
The Sony ST-SA50ES is a stereo FM/AM tuner introduced in October 1997 as part of Sony’s ES (Elevated Standard) series, known for high build quality and superior audio engineering. It features a refined reception system designed to minimize interference, with support for FM, AM, and AM stereo broadcasts. The tuner includes a 30-station random preset function for both FM and AM bands and allows simple area-based preset selection via the Super Area Call feature. It can receive audio from VHS1-3 channels and supports FM text multiplex broadcasting when connected to the optional CTD-S100 text display unit.

Design
The ST-SA50ES features a newly developed active selection mode and an advanced reception circuit designed to reduce high-frequency interference. A PLL circuit with a crystal oscillator is enclosed in a shielded case, internally divided into isolated blocks to prevent crosstalk. The power supply uses a radial layout, with the rectifier circuit at the center of the rear board and surrounding components arranged crescentically to optimize power distribution. The tuner supports AM stereo with an extended AM frequency band and includes a detection output terminal for connecting the optional CTD-S100 text display unit.
Context
Part of Sony’s ES (Elevated Standard) series, the ST-SA50ES represents a high point in consumer tuner design, emphasizing precision engineering and audio fidelity. The series was developed to deliver elevated performance standards in mass-market audio equipment.
