Design
The SR-929 uses a crystal oscillator circuit for its quartz servo system, ensuring precise rotational control. It features a statically balanced S-shaped tonearm with knife-edge vertical and jewel needle-point horizontal bearings, mounted on a massive zinc alloy base with ±3 mm height adjustment. The arm includes lateral balance and anti-skate (inside-force canceller) controls, with a tracking force dial graduated in 0.05g steps. The headshell uses gold-plated pins for connection. The chassis is suspended on height-adjustable, damped insulators to isolate vibrations, and the cabinet is constructed from a triple-layer "Sansui black" polyester resin over particleboard to prevent howling. The motor is powered by a toroidal transformer to minimize flux leakage. The 302 mm die-cast aluminum platter is non-magnetic and features a slightly concave mat with pyramidal edge projections. The strobe housing around the platter has a silver aluminum finish, and the turntable includes a two-point viscous-damped cueing system.
Context
The SR-929 was the flagship model in the Sansui SR-700 series and positioned as the brand’s highest-end turntable during the mid-to-late 1970s, a period when LPs dominated high-fidelity audio. It was developed with engineering collaboration linked to Micro Seiki and represented Sansui’s most advanced turntable technology. While highly regarded for its build and sound quality, period assessments often placed it just below contemporaneous flagships from Technics and Denon.
