Design
The sr-727 features a massive non-resonant diecast aluminum chassis designed to minimize vibration and acoustic feedback. It uses a 3.3kg platter with a felt mat and is supported by four adjustable feet for leveling. The static-balanced S-shaped tonearm has an effective mass of 16g and is engineered to track accurately with cartridges weighing between 4 and 10 grams. The drive system relies on a 4-pole synchronous motor, typical of high-end turntables of the era.
Context
The SR-727 was Sansui's top-of-the-line turntable in the late 1970s, positioned above other models in the lineup. It competed with high-performance turntables from leading manufacturers of the time, with Sansui’s SR-929 and SR-838 models noted alongside the best from Thorens and Technics.
Market
The most common issue with the SR-727 is the need for a new belt, which is widely available from various suppliers. The motor may require lubrication after many years of use. The turntable remains highly sought after by vinyl enthusiasts and is regarded as a classic, with owners noting it still sounds great when maintained.
