Pioneer SA-8800II (1976)
A high-fidelity stereo pre-main amplifier released by Pioneer in 1976, designed for precision audio reproduction with low distortion and modular signal path control.
Overview
The Pioneer SA-8800II is a stereo pre-main amplifier manufactured by Pioneer and released in 1976. It integrates a high-performance preamplifier and power amplifier in one chassis, built for audiophiles seeking accurate sound reproduction. The unit features independent left and right power transformers, a dual power supply system, and extensive signal path customization including selectable cartridge loading, tone control turnover frequencies, and filtering options. It supports both phono and line-level inputs, with separation between preamp and power amp sections for system flexibility.

Design
The SA-8800II uses two independent power transformers mounted on the left and right sides, feeding a dual power supply system with ±25V delivered to critical circuitry. The preamplifier's equalizer section features a first-stage differential, 3-stage direct-coupled design operating in Class A with pure complementary SEPP output and separate positive/negative power supplies. A 32-step attenuator ensures precise volume control with minimal left/right gang error (≤0.5 dB). The tone control uses a 3-stage turnover switching NFB design with selectable frequencies, while the control knobs feature Klix/Klukš tops for tactile feedback. The power amplifier employs a ±2 power supply, 2-stage differential amplifier with current mirror circuit, and a parallel push-pull final stage with pure complementary OCL topology. Heat is managed via a chimney-style heatsink, and protection is provided by a power relay and fast electronic circuit that eliminates turn-on clicks. The unit includes preamp/power amp separation terminals, 2-system tape monitoring, loudness contour, and subsonic/high-cut filters.
