Pioneer S-5000twin (1990)
A tall-boy speaker system from 1990 featuring a full crystalline diamond diaphragm tweeter and dual 20 cm ALCC cone woofers.
Overview
The Pioneer S-5000twin is a floor-standing speaker system released in 1990, designed as a vertical twin configuration with advanced wavefront control and magnetic shielding. It uses a 2-way, 3-speaker bass reflex design and features a rare all-polycrystalline diamond dome tweeter paired with two 20 cm ALCC (alginate composite cone) woofers. Built for high linearity and low distortion, it incorporates alnico magnets, zinc die-cast frames, and a fully isolated internal network. The cabinet is finished in high-quality walnut real wood with internal vibration control measures.

Design
The S-5000twin uses a vertical twin system with wave surface control technology, enabling voluminous low-frequency reproduction through dual small-diameter woofers. The 3 cm dome tweeter features a 100% polycrystalline diamond diaphragm and a painted maple laminated W. F. (Wave Front) director for precise wavefront control. The 20 cm woofers use ALCC diaphragms made from pulp, aramid fiber, and alginic acid fiber, with high-linearity magnetic circuits, short voice coils, and alnico magnets. Units are mounted via a full midship system: woofers attach to an inner baffle, and tweeters are fixed from behind through a hair-implanted layer, reducing baffle vibration. A floating top and shield frame further suppress resonance. The crossover network separates woofer and tweeter circuits, with felt damping under the tweeter section and crimped wiring to reduce signal loss; a radial power supply feeds the network. The enclosure uses high-quality walnut real wood plating and internal wool for sound absorption, and features a bi-wiring terminal for separate low and high-frequency signal input.
