Luxman M-7i

A high-power stereo amplifier with balanced inputs, low distortion, and an upgrade path from the M-7

Overview

The Luxman M-7i is a stereo power amplifier introduced as an improved version of the M-7, featuring enhanced circuitry and build quality. It was offered both as a new unit and as a factory upgrade from the original M-7 for ¥50,000. Built during Luxman’s post-Alpine era under AZDEN, the M-7i delivers high output power with exceptional clarity and stability. It supports stereo operation as well as monaural use via BTL connection, making it versatile for high-end audio setups.

Design

The M-7i uses Luxman’s proprietary CSSC circuit based on all-stage direct-coupled complementary symmetry design, with a dual FET differential cascode first stage and a base-mounted current transmission second stage. The current amplification stage employs a 3-stage Darlington complementary circuit, driving six large bipolar transistors (Pc = 150W) per channel in push-pull configuration. It features Luxman’s OD beta NFB technology and eliminates the need for a DC servo amplifier by achieving high DC stability through refined bias characteristics. The power supply uses a high-inertia toroidal transformer and dual 22,000 μF electrolytic capacitors. Input stages include left/right independent attenuators with a 6-contact resistance switching system, and both balanced and RCA inputs are provided. Speaker outputs include custom 3-way terminals compatible with banana plugs, Y-lugs, and Speakon connectors. The unit includes a logarithmic power meter, internal noise filters for digital interference, and a line phase sensor for AC polarity detection. Custom-made carbon film audio resistors are used throughout. A reference position allows 100W output at 1V input. The M-7i also shares the LUX T-Tag found on early M-7f models. Optional custom builds featured solid aluminum top and side panels instead of wood.

Context

The M-7i was part of Luxman’s re-launch following the Alpine ownership period, manufactured under AZDEN. It succeeded the M-7 and was later succeeded by the M-7f. The model continued Luxman’s tradition of high-power, high-fidelity amplification with advanced circuit refinement and modular serviceability, including board-level upgrades from earlier models.

Market

The M-7i originally sold for ¥350,000 around 1998. Units upgraded from the M-7 were available for ¥50,000. Custom-order versions with aluminum side panels and altered front anodizing were also offered on request.
