Infinity Kappa 6.1i
A 3-way floorstanding speaker system with advanced driver materials and precision crossover tuning,
Overview
The Infinity Kappa 6.1i is a 3-way, 3-speaker bass reflex floorstanding speaker system developed as part of the "New Kappa" series. Manufactured by Infinity, it was priced at ¥120,000 per unit around 1993. The speaker features a column-shaped polygonal cabinet made of solid oak and oak veneer with a 26.5mm thick baffle to reduce internal standing waves, and includes a rear-firing bass reflex port at the bottom for enhanced low-frequency response. It supports bi-amplification and offers level adjustments for midrange and tweeter output.

Design
The woofer uses an IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) cone—a composite of graphite fiber and polypropylene—molded under high pressure, resulting in a cone that is 10% lighter and 5% stiffer than previous versions. The midrange driver employs a 7.6 cm poly dome diaphragm 0.3mm thick, with an aluminum mesh diffuser on the rear to manage rear wave interference. The high-frequency driver is a planar EMIT-R (Electromagnetic Induction Tweeter) featuring a Kapton film diaphragm and a photo-etched voice coil. The crossover network was designed using MLSSA software and fine-tuned in an anechoic chamber, utilizing selected components and special-specification internal wiring. The cabinet is anti-magnetic, suitable for AV environments, and equipped with removable spikes for room tuning.
Context
The Kappa 6.1i was part of the "New Kappa" series, which aimed to bring advanced Infinity loudspeaker technologies to a more accessible market segment. It shared design philosophies with the higher-end Kappa 9. The Kappa series extended beyond home audio, including automotive loudspeakers, and the 6.1i was available in a special-order Black Oak finish.
