Akai AA-1010 (1976)
A compact cap-coupled receiver from Akai’s 1976 lineup, featuring FM/AM tuning, preset station selection, and a brushed aluminium faceplate.
Overview
The Akai AA-1010 is a receiver combining a stereo amplifier and FM/AM tuner in one unit, produced in 1976. It was Akai’s most affordable model at the time, designed for basic stereo setups in small spaces. The unit features a varactor tuner with preset station selection, an FM stereo lamp, and a tuning meter for both FM and AM bands. It includes a stereo headphone output, loudness control, and switchable speaker outputs (A, B, or A+B), with the power switch doubling as a speaker selector.

Design
The AA-1010 features a brushed aluminium faceplate and a plywood case with faux vinyl woodgrain veneer. It uses a cap-coupled design with a multi-function printed circuit board and original Elna-branded electrolytic capacitors, including a 3300uF filter capacitor. The front panel includes a phase-locked loop FM multiplex circuit for stable stereo separation, a heavy flywheel for precise tuning, and dedicated knobs for volume, bass, treble, and input selection. The back includes a sensitive AM ferrite bar antenna, and the unit supports preset station selection via a varactor tuner system.
Context
The AA-1010 was Akai’s lowest-priced receiver in 1976, positioned as an entry-level model alongside other classic Akai gear like the M-8, M-10, GX-280D, and GX-4000D.
Market
Common issues include worn silk screening on the power/speaker selector knob, stiff control knobs, and degraded capacitors reading up to 20% off their rated values. Some owners report right-channel speaker output failure on A/B settings and hum in the phono section. Maintenance typically involves contact cleaning, re-lubrication, and re-capping—often upgrading the filter capacitor to 4700uF. Restored units are praised for strong performance, with one owner reporting continuous use since 1977.
