Accuphase DP-80 (1986)
CD transport released in July 1986 as Accuphase’s first CD player, paired with the DC-81 digital processor.
Overview
The Accuphase DP-80 is a CD-dedicated digital signal reproducer (CD transport) released in July 1986 by Accuphase Laboratory Inc. It was the company’s first CD player, designed to be used with the DC-81 digital processor. The DP-80 features a non-contact optical reading system using a GaAlAs semiconductor laser with a 660 nm emission wavelength and a KSS190 laser assembly. It supports 3" discs and outputs digital audio via two optical outputs and one 75 Ω coaxial output, conforming to EIA and EIAJ standards.

Design
The DP-80 uses a master clock system to control all operations, preventing beat interference from multiple oscillators. The mechanism is mounted on a high-rigidity ceramic-mixed special resin base and floated from both the chassis and the disc table to isolate vibration. It is secured on a die-cast aluminum frame and reinforced with a solid structure to prevent resonance. The pickup uses a linear motor for fast, smooth operation, and two 8-bit microprocessors handle mechanism control and display/key functions. Digital outputs include two optical fiber terminals (EIAJ standard) and a 75 Ω coaxial output, with optical isolation preventing noise transfer. A full line filter reduces power-line noise. The unit features a large toroidal transformer, a single main PCB for control and data extraction, and Sony LSIs for servo and digital processing. The exterior has gold-style hairline panels and natural persimmon wood sideboards.
Context
The DP-80 was Accuphase’s first CD player, marking the brand’s entry into digital audio. It was developed as a pair with the DC-81 digital processor, forming a high-end digital playback system. Accuphase, founded in late 1972 by former Kenwood engineer Jiro Kasuga, expanded from amplifiers and tuners into digital sources with this model.
Market
Common failures include IC CX23035 malfunction, KSS-190A laser head failure, servo control issues, and degraded lubrication causing gear jams. Repairs require circuit realignment, proper bearing lubrication (oil-based preferred), and servo system calibration. A used DP-80L and DC-81L combination was listed for €2,950 on March 26, 2026.
