EDP Wasp Deluxe (1979–1981)
A rare British analog synthesizer with a full-size keyboard, built as an enhanced version of the original Wasp
Overview
The EDP Wasp Deluxe is a monophonic analog synthesizer developed by Electronic Dream Plant (EDP), designed by Chris Huggett. Manufactured from 1979 to 1981, it was an upgraded version of the original Wasp, featuring a more playable 37-key full-size keyboard in place of the touch-sensitive interface. Only around 50 units were made—no more than 100 according to EDP—making it exceptionally rare. Housed in a wooden case, the Wasp Deluxe retained the same core circuit design as the original, with matching component designators, but added an oscillator mixer and an external audio input.

Design
The Wasp Deluxe replaced the original’s touch keyboard with a conventional 37-key synth-action keyboard, improving playability. It added an oscillator mixer and an external audio input while retaining the original Wasp’s circuit layout, with identical component designators (IC1, C1, R100, etc.). The PCB is mounted to the front panel via rotary switches, which over time can split and fail under the board’s weight. Replacement Alpha Taiwan rotary switches are identical and widely available. The synthesizer features two audio oscillators and a noise source routed through a filter, with a control oscillator affecting both audio oscillators.
Context
The Wasp Deluxe was a direct enhancement of the original EDP Wasp, which launched in 1978 at £199. With fewer than 100 units produced, it was a limited-run upgrade aimed at improving usability and reliability. It represented the high end of EDP’s early analog synth offerings, though no details place it within a broader product lineup.
Market
The Wasp Deluxe has become increasingly valuable, with decent units selling for £600 and up on eBay. Common issues include failed OTA chips in the VCF due to overcurrent, damage from amateur modifications (such as attempted CV control additions), and cracked rotary switches from supporting the PCB’s weight over time. The service manual is available online, aiding repairs.
