Contax IIa
A postwar 35mm rangefinder camera made by Zeiss, featuring a vertical metal shutter and combined viewfinder-rangefinder.
Overview
The Contax IIa is a 35mm rangefinder camera produced by Zeiss as a postwar evolution of the original Contax II and III models introduced in 1936. It retains the core mechanical design of its predecessors, including a metal vertical traveling shutter and a combined viewfinder and rangefinder system. The camera uses a bayonet lens mount and features improved film loading via a removable back for easier access.

Design
The Contax IIa uses a metal vertical traveling shutter and a rangefinder system based on rotating glass wedges rather than a single mirror. The viewfinder and rangefinder are combined into a single viewing system. Film loading is simplified with a removable back that allows easy access to the film chamber.
Context
The original Contax II and III models, produced from 1936 to 1942, were developed by Zeiss as direct competitors to the Leica. The IIa continues this lineage as a postwar version, maintaining the professional-grade build and mechanical reliability of the prewar designs.
Market
Shutters in Contax IIa cameras often fail due to broken shutter curtain straps, a known issue after decades of aging. Like other precision mechanical cameras, the IIa requires periodic cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment to remain functional.
