Canon EOS R (2018–2023)

A full-frame mirrorless camera with strong video capabilities and dual pixel autofocus, discontinued in 2023.

Overview

The Canon EOS R is a full-frame mirrorless camera announced in October 2018 and discontinued in 2023. It was Canon's first mirrorless camera in the EOS R system, built around the RF lens mount. The camera shares its 30 MP sensor with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and features an articulating touchscreen LCD, making it particularly suited for video work. It was succeeded by newer models like the EOS R6 Mark III, which reviewers recommend for those seeking updated performance.

Design

The Canon EOS R features a fully articulating touchscreen LCD, providing flexibility for video recording and off-angle shooting.

Context

The EOS R was followed by the EOS Ra, an astrophotography-focused variant announced in November 2019. Compared to the EOS 5D Mark IV, the EOS R was considered superior for video due to its articulating screen, smaller and lighter body, and modern feature set despite using the same sensor.

Market

As of January 2024, used EOS R bodies were priced around $900. The original kit (body with RF 24-105mm L lens) was priced at $2,845, while the body alone was listed at $1,850 at the time of review. Buyers were advised to verify authorized dealers and be cautious of unsealed boxes.
