Balda Baldix (c.1952–1955)
A folding medium format camera made in post-war West Germany, using 120 or 620 rollfilm for 6x6cm images.
Overview
The Balda Baldix is a folding camera produced in West Germany starting around 1952, following the reestablishment of Balda operations in Bunde after World War II. It was part of a new line of post-war cameras that revived earlier naming conventions from the 1930s. The Baldix was offered in a 6x6 format and could use either 120 or 620 film, giving it some flexibility in film availability. A version with a built-in rangefinder was available and marketed as the Mess-Baldix. Unlike the Baldax, the Baldix lacks an automatic film counter in its hood design.

Context
The Baldix represents a post-war revival of Balda’s camera production under new West German management after the destruction of its original Dresden factory. Named in the tradition of earlier models like the Baldax, the Baldix was part of a broader shift toward mass-market folding cameras. The Baldax line, starting with the original Baldax, evolved into highly regarded models such as the Super Baldax and Mess-Baldix, with the Baldix occupying a place in the 6x6 folding lineup. Balda, once one of Germany’s largest camera manufacturers, eventually ceased production in the 1960s due to increasing competition from Japanese camera makers.
Collectibility
The Balda Baldix is considered infrequent in non-specialized settings such as garage sales in France, indicating moderate rarity among general collectors.
