Yamaha NS-2000 (1982)

A high-end bookshelf speaker system engineered for musically mature sound reproduction using advanced materials like pure beryllium and carbon fiber.

Overview

The Yamaha NS-2000 is a 3-way, 3-speaker, airtight bookshelf speaker system introduced in 1982. Designed with a focus on artistic sound reproduction, it features a vertically aligned driver array on a reinforced baffle with curved ends. The enclosure uses high-density particle board and solid beech around the round baffle, finished in American Walnut with an open-pore treatment. Each driver is constructed with high-purity materials and precision engineering to achieve extended frequency response and low distortion.

Design

The NS-2000 was developed to achieve musically mature and emotionally moving sound reproduction. The 33 cm low-range driver (JA-3301) uses a paper-free pure carbon fiber cone made by arranging unidirectional carbon fiber sheets in eight fan-shaped sections with a special resin matrix, forming a straight conical shape with a ribbed back and bent outer edge. Its magnetic circuit, designed via finite element method, uses a ferrite magnet (180 φ -100 φ -20t) with 11,350 gauss flux density and 220,000 maxwell total flux. The voice coil is an 88 φ edgewise-wound oxygen-free copper type with urethane foam roll edges. The 8.8 cm mid-range (JA-0802A) uses a pure beryllium hard dome diaphragm formed by electron-beam vacuum deposition, with a small radius of curvature and a diffuser. Its voice coil is an edgewise-wound oxygen-free copper ribbon, with a tangential edge of double-coated special fiber. The magnetic circuit uses a 156 φ -80 φ -25tmm ferrite magnet producing 18,400 gauss and 150,000 maxwell. The 3 cm tweeter (JA-0526A) also uses a pure beryllium dome, weighing just 0.028g with a 23 mm diameter. It features an acoustic diffuser, kraft paper bobbin, and copper-clad aluminum ribbon wire reinforcement, with a tangential edge of double-coated fiber. The tweeter magnet is 100 φ -50 φ -22tmm ferrite, delivering 18,800 gauss and 34,000 maxwell. The crossover network uses a large ferrite core, oxygen-free copper inductors, all-MP capacitors, and individually fused oxygen-free copper internal wiring. The 80L airtight enclosure is built from 25 mm high-density particle board, reinforced with angle blocks and bars, and designed using modal analysis.
