Yamaha CR-420 (1977–1980)
An AM/FM stereo receiver from Yamaha’s CR series, produced from 1977 to 1980 with 25 watts per channel output into 8 ohms.
Overview
The Yamaha CR-420 is an AM/FM stereo receiver manufactured between 1977 and 1980. It belongs to Yamaha's CR series of receivers and was designed for high-fidelity audio reproduction with integrated amplifier and tuner sections. The unit delivers 25 watts per channel into 8 ohms and features a low-noise front-end design, direct-coupled OCL amplifier stages, and a unique transistor switching method for the MPX circuit.

Design
A low-noise FET is used for the front end of the tuner section, a solid state filter with high stability and no misalignment is used for the IF amplifier section, and a high-gain monolithic IC with a differential amplifier is used for the IF circuit. The MPX circuit uses a transistor switching method unique to Yamaha. An auto-touch switch is used for the tuning knob, and the AFC is automatically turned OFF when the tuning knob is touched. The receiver is equipped with a muting circuit. All stages are directly connected to the OCL amplifier, improving characteristics by eliminating the coupling capacitor. It includes a loudness switch, high-low filter, a selector switch for the preamp and main amplifier, and a microphone mixing circuit.
