Technics SE-A7000 (1992)

A high-powered stereo amplifier using a proprietary MOS class AA circuit, released in December 1992.

Overview

The Technics SE-A7000 is a stereo power amplifier developed by Technics and released in December 1992. It is based on an earlier SE-A7000 model and improved through individual refinement of each component. Designed for high-fidelity audio reproduction, it delivers substantial power across multiple impedance loads and features extensive anti-vibration construction, balanced inputs, and a precision power meter. The amplifier uses a unique MOS class AA circuit topology with MOS FETs in the voltage control stage and bipolar transistors in the current supply amplifiers to enhance speaker drive capability.

Design

The SE-A7000 uses a newly developed MOS class AA circuit where all speaker current is supplied by the current supply amplifier via the class AA bridge effect. The voltage control amplifier employs MOS FETs as the amplifying element, while the current supply amplifiers use bipolar transistors for strong current delivery. The power supply includes three transformers—one each for left and right current supply amplifiers and one for the shared voltage control amplifier—constructed with oxygen-free copper wire and enclosed in a 3-layer magnetic shield with special resin. Total power supply capacitance is 93,600 μF using 10 anti-vibration smoothing capacitors. Internal wiring uses OFC bus bars, LC-OFC, and 6N ESC-OCC, with left and right channels fully isolated. The chassis features a 3 mm thick heavyweight top plate, high rigidity construction, large insulators, and real wood mirror-finish side panels. Balanced inputs use a DL-type permalloy core transformer resistant to external magnetic interference. A high-precision peak power meter with 10 mm thick bronze glass displays output from 0.0001W to 300W and includes a light ON/OFF switch. Speaker terminals are large gold-plated connectors mounted on an aluminum base, compatible with thick cables, and use an electronic selector with gold-clad contacts. A non-inductive resistor and PC-OCC power cord with polarity indication complete the design.

Market

The Technics SE-A7000 was originally priced at ¥450,000 at launch and is now available on the vintage market, indicating its status as a collectible high-end amplifier.
