Technics SL DL1 (1981)

A direct-drive, fully automatic turntable with linear tracking arm, released in March 1981

Overview

The Technics SL-DL1 is a linear tracking full auto player made by Technics, released in March 1981. It uses a dynamic balance type linear tracking tone arm that moves straight across the record surface, minimizing tracking error to within ±0.1°. The turntable automatically detects record size—setting 33 1/3 rpm for LPs and 45 rpm for singles—via microcomputer control, and allows manual selection between speeds. It features a plug-in MM stereo cartridge and is built around a direct-drive system with a brushless DC motor integrated into the platter.

Design

The SL-DL1 uses a dynamic balance linear tracking arm supported by a 4-point gimbal suspension bearing structure, with a slide bearing low-friction path for smooth travel. Arm movement is driven by a DC motor and guided by an optical sensor near the stylus tip that detects deflection, keeping internal force near zero. The turntable employs a direct-drive motor (D.D. motor) that integrates the rotor and platter, and the cabinet uses TNRC material for vibration isolation. The cartridge connects via a proprietary plug-in system, and the entire operation is microcomputer-controlled for full auto playback, including 2-speed search for cueing.

Market

Originally priced at ¥59,800 in Japan at launch, the SL-DL1 was listed for $280 USD in 1983. Used units have appeared on the market, such as one listed at £179.00, and replacement parts like belts and styli are available from specialty vendors. Known issues include tone arm tracking failure, speed instability, and hum in both channels during playback.
