Spendor
BBC-bred monitors for people who trust their ears
History
Spendor was founded in East Sussex, England in 1969 by Spencer Hughes and his wife Dorothy. Spencer Hughes was a senior engineer in the BBC Research Department and had been instrumental in developing the famous LS3/5A and BC1 loudspeakers for the BBC. The company name "Spendor" combines Spencer and Dorothy with the British slang "splendid"—reflecting both the founders and the quality of their products. The BC1 (Broadcast Monitor 1) was Spendor's first product. Originally developed at the BBC but not put into production by the corporation, Hughes took the design and began manufacturing it under the Spendor name. The BC1 became a reference standard in recording studios worldwide. The SP1 (1976) refined the BC1 design with improved drivers and crossover. It became the flagship of the Spendor line and remained in production for many years. The SA1 and S3/5 brought Spendor quality to smaller enclosures. In the 1980s and 1990s, Spendor continued to produce high-quality monitors including the SP2, SP100, and the compact S3/5—a modern take on the LS3/5A concept. The company maintained its focus on natural, uncolored sound reproduction. Today, Spendor continues as an independent British manufacturer, still producing loudspeakers with the philosophy established by Spencer Hughes over 50 years ago.Key Facts
