Quad FM1 (1959–1968)

A valve-based FM tuner designed for integration with Quad’s classic tube electronics, primarily the Quad 22 control unit.

Overview

The Quad FM1 is a valve-powered FM tuner produced by Acoustical Manufacturing Co. Ltd. from 1959 to 1968. It was designed as a companion to Quad's Series 2 valve electronics, particularly the Quad 22 control unit and Quad II amplifier. While originally a mono tuner, it could be adapted for stereo FM reception with an optional Multiplex Decoder mounted on the rear of the tuner's cover. The unit uses a Foster-Seeley discriminator for FM detection and is noted for its strong mono signal-to-noise performance, though its stereo decoding capability has been criticized in user discussions.

Design

The Quad FM1 is constructed using valve (tube) technology and features a Foster-Seeley discriminator circuit. An optional Multiplex Decoder could be fitted externally to enable stereo FM reception. Early versions required output modifications to remove de-emphasis when using the stereo decoder. The design emphasizes integration with the Quad 22, for which it was specifically built, and some users have adapted it for use with later solid-state Quad amplifiers like the 33/303 with the addition of a dedicated power supply.

Context

The Quad FM1 was part of a complete Quad valve electronics suite known as the Series 2, which included the Quad II power amplifier and Quad 22 control unit. It was engineered to function within this ecosystem, ensuring matched performance and aesthetic continuity. Though designed for valve systems, it remained in use among enthusiasts who integrated it with later solid-state Quad components, demonstrating its enduring role in high-fidelity setups.
