Design
The C-77 uses a fully discrete circuit design with a first-stage differential, three-stage direct-coupled amplifier in both the equalizer and control amplifier sections, ending in a class-A SEPP output stage. A ±48V power supply feeds the equalizer circuit, enhancing headroom and stability. The tone control system is Pioneer’s original twin-tone design, combining main and sub controls to generate up to 5929 unique frequency curves. The volume control is a special 4-channel attenuator with 22 contact points, reducing noise by splitting attenuation between the front and back of the control amplifier. NFB components include precision 1% tolerance nichrome resistors and 2% styrofoam capacitors, ensuring frequency accuracy within ±0.2 dB across the full 20 Hz–20 kHz range.
Context
The C-77 was designed to pair with the M-77 power amplifier as a high-fidelity integrated system. It shares engineering philosophy and market positioning with the Pioneer SPEC-1 and SPEC-2, serving as a reference-grade preamplifier for discerning audiophiles of the era.
