Nakamichi 480Z (1981)
A 2-head cassette deck from Nakamichi’s 400-series, released in 1981, featuring Dolby C noise reduction and precision tape transport.
Overview
The Nakamichi 480Z is a two-head stereo cassette deck introduced in 1981 as the second generation of the 480 series. Built by Nakamichi, it sits below the higher-end 481Z and 482Z models, which use a 3-head configuration. The 480Z supports Dolby B and C noise reduction, metal tape compatibility, and includes a bias fine adjustment mechanism for optimizing recording performance. It features a frequency-distributed double capstan transport system driven by a DC servo motor, designed for stable tape speed and low wow and flutter. The front panel includes a soft-touch logic control system and a wide-range LED peak level meter that displays levels from -40dB to +10dB across 16 segments.

Design
The 480Z uses a 2-head configuration with an RP-9E SENDUST recording/reproducing head and an E-8L type double-gap erase head featuring ferrite and Sendust cores for high-frequency performance and magnetic efficiency. The chassis is resonance-damped, constructed from aluminum alloy with resin damping to absorb microvibrations. Tape transport relies on a frequency-distributed double capstan system driven by a DC servo motor for precise speed control. The control system uses C-MOS logic with soft-touch buttons and includes a tape start memory function and timer recording. A built-in MPX filter, bias oscillator circuit, and bias fine tuning mechanism (±10% adjustment range) support high-fidelity recording. The unit is available in black and silver finishes and includes a high-output headphone amplifier with a 2-level switch.
Product Family
The 480Z is part of Nakamichi’s 400-series cassette decks and is the second generation of the 480 line. Unlike the high-end 481Z and 482Z models, which use a 3-head configuration, the 480Z uses a 2-head design, making it a more accessible model within the series.
Market
The Nakamichi 480Z originally sold for ¥99,800 in Japan and $595 in the US in 1981. The optional RM-100 remote control unit was sold separately for ¥6,000. Common operational issues reported include failure of the auto-stop function and reverse transport (rewind), often attributed to age or prolonged disuse. Service manuals are available, and restoration kits are offered for refurbishment.
