KEF Reference Model3 (c.1995)
A tall-boy speaker system using KEF's Uni-Q driver and Twin Coupled Cavity (TCC) system for enhanced low-frequency response
Overview
The KEF Reference Model3 is a tall-boy type speaker system introduced around 1995 as part of KEF’s high-end Reference series. It combines a 4-way driver array with KEF’s proprietary TCC (Twin Coupled Cavity) system, designed to deliver extended, controlled bass performance. Built with precision-matched components, the system ensures minimal left-to-right variation, with output characteristics kept within ±0.5 dB. Priced at ¥250,000 per unit at launch, it targeted audiophiles seeking reference-grade accuracy and full-range reproduction in a floor-standing format.

Design
The Reference Model3 uses KEF’s Uni-Q driver and the Twin Coupled Cavity (TCC) system for low-frequency control. Two 20 cm B200 pulp cone woofers are mounted back-to-back inside the cabinet, each sealed within box-shaped cavities at the top and bottom. The TCC system couples these drivers acoustically, allowing them to absorb and emit sound in tandem, effectively producing sound pressure equivalent to a single driver with twice the cone excursion. The design enhances bass output while minimizing distortion and cabinet resonance.
Market
Originally priced at ¥250,000 per unit around 1995, the Reference Model3 remains a sought-after floor-standing speaker among KEF collectors and high-fidelity enthusiasts for its precision engineering and full-range performance.
