Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 8000 (1992)
Active floor-standing loudspeakers introduced in 1992, featuring integrated amplification, a minimalist inverted pencil-shape design, and adaptive bass linearisation in later models.
Overview
The Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 8000 is a pair of active floor-standing loudspeakers launched in 1992. Each speaker contains two 143-watt Class AB amplifiers—one for the bass and one for the treble—delivering 286 watts of total power. Designed for use in dry environments only, the BeoLab 8000 was built with a fully shielded, all-aluminum chassis mounted on a lead-filled cast iron base and intended for center-room placement thanks to its sculptural, edge-free styling.

Design
The BeoLab 8000 features a minimalist, inverted pencil-shape design with a brushed aluminum cabinet and reflective finish matching the BeoLab Penta. The curved, spire-like form eliminates sharp edges or joints to preserve sound quality and allows free-standing placement in the center of a room without an "ugly side." Each speaker includes a hidden rear connection panel behind a slim hinge-out cover, with power and signal cables routed through a single rubber sleeve. The system uses a Power Link socket with an L/R switch and includes an automatic amplifier start-up when signal is detected, with no manual controls.
Context
The BeoLab 8000 was designed to complement multi-channel systems like the Beosystem AV 9000 and the Beocenter 9500, with its small footprint making it ideal for surround sound setups. Early models used a 3-way design with a passive filter for one woofer; later versions (from serial number 10145230) switched to a 2-way configuration with both woofers in parallel to meet consumer demand for stronger bass. The MkII version, released in January 2003 (from serial number 16992475), introduced redesigned electronic crossovers with adaptive bass linearisation for improved low-level bass response. The BeoLab 8000 was replaced by the nearly identical BeoLab 8002.
Market
The BeoLab 8000 had an original price of $3,000 per pair. Common issues include amplifier malfunction indicated by an orange LED, with troubleshooting involving cable checks, resets, and professional repair. Some early drivers required modification: certain woofers had plastic cones prone to melting, and tweeters could fail under full amplifier power despite a built-in protection circuit.
