Altec Lansing Milestone 405
A compact bookshelf speaker system using a full-range 4-inch driver in a bass-reflex enclosure, designed for direct amplifier connection without a crossover.
Overview
The Altec Lansing Milestone 405 is a bookshelf-type speaker system built around a single 4-inch full-range driver, the 405-8H. It was priced at ¥56,000 per unit in Japan around 1999. The system uses a 1-way, 1-speaker configuration with a bass-reflex design, intended for straightforward integration into compact audio setups. Notably, it lacks any passive crossover network, allowing the driver to connect directly to the amplifier via terminal connectors.

Design
The Milestone 405 uses the 405-8H, a 4-inch (10 cm) full-range driver from Altec Lansing’s 405 Series, featuring a single cone construction with a urethane foam edge, cast frame, and large magnet magnetic circuit. This design contributes to its 90dB/W/m sensitivity. The enclosure is constructed from 12 mm thick Itaya amicorum (Italian) maple laminate/plywood and finished with a wood grain surface layer. The bass-reflex cabinet enhances low-frequency response without requiring additional components.
