Altec Lansing Magnificent-II (1977)
A floor-standing all-horn/bass reflex speaker system released in 1977 with a rated output of 103dB/W and a crossover at 1.2kHz.
Overview
The Altec Lansing Magnificent-II is a 2-way, 2-speaker floor type system combining horn-loaded mid/high frequencies with a bass reflex woofer section. Released in 1977, it was designed as an improved version of the original MAGNIFICENT speaker system. It uses a 38 cm cone woofer (416-8B) for low-frequency reproduction and a horn assembly (802-8G + 511B) for mid and high frequencies, with a crossover network (N1201-8A) set at 1.2kHz and an 18dB/octave slope.

Design
The Magnificent-II improves upon the original MAGNIFICENT with refined bass reflex tuning and enhanced high-frequency performance. The 38 cm 416-8B woofer is front-loaded with a short horn and paired with a bass reflex enclosure for extended low-end response. Mid and high frequencies are handled by a horn assembly combining the 802-8G driver and 511B sectoral horn, directly coupled for efficient transmission up to 20 kHz. The 802-8G features Altec’s Tangerine Phase Plug, which uses radial tapered slits instead of annular rings to eliminate resonant energy dips and deliver smooth high-frequency output. The crossover network, N1201-8A, includes independent level controls for mid and high ranges. Internal wiring uses low-inductance audio cable, and the driver layout follows Altec’s traditional phasing method, aligning diaphragms on the same plane to minimize phase differences. The enclosure structure follows that of the A7, and a grating-style grill covers the front. A dedicated terminal allows for bi-amping.
