Altec Lansing 419A (1968)

A 30 cm full-range speaker unit with a bi-flex cone design, released in 1968.

Overview

The Altec Lansing 419A is a 30 cm special cone type full-range speaker unit introduced in 1968. It was designed to deliver wide-frequency audio reproduction with reduced distortion across low, mid, and high ranges. Unlike multi-driver systems, the 419A integrates multiple cone elements into a single unit to handle the entire audible spectrum. It uses a lightweight alloy dome radiator at the center of the cone to extend high-frequency response, while the main cone structure is engineered with varying stiffness zones to improve linearity.

Design

The 419A is known as a bi-flex speaker, featuring a large cone and a smaller cone with differing stiffness, combined into a multi-damped corrugated structure. This design reduces distortion in the ultra-low, mid-low, and mid-frequency ranges. A dome radiator made of light alloy is mounted at the center of the cone and handles high-frequency output up to 15 kHz. The unit includes a strong aluminum die-cast frame to minimize distortion caused by aging and to suppress resonance from cone vibrations.

Market

The Altec Lansing 419A was originally priced at ¥46,800 per unit around 1970.
