Akai S612 (1985)

A 12-bit, six-voice rackmount sampler with analog filtering and real-time sample editing, released in 1985.

Overview

The Akai S612 is a 12-bit digital sampler made in Japan by Akai Electric Co., Ltd., introduced in 1985 as the first in Akai's "S" series of samplers. It is a 2U-high 19" rackmount unit with six-voice polyphony, designed for external MIDI control and featuring mic or line inputs, a continuous variable analog low-pass filter, and an LFO with sine wave, speed, depth, and delay controls. The unit has no keyboard and lacks built-in effects or a sequencer. It was praised at release as "the first affordable polyphonic MIDI sampler" and noted for its operational success on conventional instruments and records, despite quantization noise.

Design

The S612 uses licensed Replay circuitry from Syco Systems/Electro-Harmonix and features real-time start and end point sliders, a rare and praised interface element. It includes an analog low-pass filter and supports sample playback at variable speeds for pitch adjustment. The unit lacks internal storage beyond its 128 KB RAM and requires the optional MD280 Quick Disk drive for sample saving. It can be paired with the Akai AX60 via a 13-pin DIN voice cable for expanded analog control.

Context

The S612 was the first in a line of affordable Akai samplers, directly preceding the S900. It was Future Sound of London's first sampler and used by artists including Depeche Mode, The Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers. Marketed as "a real advance in accessible polyphonic sound sampling," it enabled early hip-hop and electronic producers to work with sampled sounds in a compact, MIDI-compatible format.

Market

Common issues include failing power supplies, degraded MD280 drive belts, and aging capacitors. Repair parts are available for ICs, slide pots, transistors, regulators, and capacitors. Despite limitations like single-sample memory and a fixed LFO waveform, its lo-fi character and analog filter have increased its collectibility over time.
