Design
The S3000XL features a front panel with 32 buttons, three knobs, and a four-way directional pad for navigation, using a menu-driven interface with a backlit LCD. It supports sectional sample editing, volume normalization, and off-line DSP functions including timestretching, resampling, and EQ with ±24dB cut/boost. The standard digital filter is described as "simple but effective" and "sweet" in character. With the optional IB304F filter board, a third envelope becomes available for filter modulation, expanding tonal shaping capabilities.
Context
The S3000XL succeeded the S1000 series and was part of Akai’s professional light grey range, competing with samplers from Kurzweil, Emu, and Ensoniq. It was praised for its versatility, large screen, and navigable interface, becoming a studio workhorse. The S2000 was a budget variant, while the S3200 followed as its successor, later joined by the S5000 and S6000 models.
Market
Originally priced around £1800–£2000 GBP, the S3000XL now sells on the used market between $150 and $900+, with some units higher. The LCD backlight is prone to fading, and the unit is discontinued with no official support from Akai. Repair parts and upgrades like memory kits, floppy drives, and effects boards remain available through specialist vendors.
