Acoustic Research AR-1 (1954, 1998)
Floorstanding loudspeaker with side-firing powered woofer, introduced in two distinct eras: the original 1954 acoustic-suspension pioneer and the 1998 Hi-Res Series revival.
Overview
The Acoustic Research AR-1 was first introduced in 1954 as the company's debut product, featuring the world's first acoustic-suspension woofer, which used air elasticity in a sealed enclosure as the restoring force. This innovation delivered extended, accurate bass from a compact cabinet and helped popularize stereo audio. A second version, the AR-1 (Hi-Res Series), was launched circa 1998–1999 during Acoustic Research’s ownership by Recoton/Audiovox. Designed by Mike Park, this floorstanding speaker combined a powered 15" side-firing woofer with a passive upper section using two 5.25" midrange drivers in D'Appolito configuration and a 1" diamond-coated titanium dome tweeter.

Design
The Hi-Res Series AR-1 features a side-firing 15" powered woofer in an acoustic-suspension sealed enclosure, paired with a passive upper section using two 5.25" magnesium-aluminum alloy midrange drivers in a D'Appolito configuration and a 1" titanium dome tweeter with an integrated waveguide. The system includes a Sunfire-designed 500W RMS amplifier with Intelligent Parameter Control (IPC) for excursion limiting, dynamic compression, thermal protection, and EQ. All drivers are magnetically shielded, and the tweeter and midrange are connected in inverted acoustic polarity.
Context
Acoustic Research was founded in 1954 by Edgar Villchur and Henry Kloss to produce the original AR-1, which debuted at the 1954 New York Audio Show and set new standards for low-frequency performance. The 1998 Hi-Res Series AR-1 was part of a revival under Recoton/Audiovox ownership, designed by Mike Park, AR’s VP of engineering. The original AR-1 led to derivatives including the AR-2 (1956) and AR-3 series, which used a 12" version of the same acoustic-suspension technology.
Market
The internal plate amplifier in the Hi-Res Series AR-1 is failure-prone, with common issues including blown output transistors, failed FETs, optocouplers, and bad solder joints; repairs are difficult and were advertised at $275 circa 2004–2026, excluding transformer replacement. The model was no longer available new as of 2005. Listener height is critical for optimal performance, with best results when ears are between 30" and 40" from the floor.
