Accuphase T-104 (1978)

FM stereo tuner with quartz-locked frequency synthesizer tuning, released in October 1978

Overview

The Accuphase T-104 is an FM stereo tuner manufactured by Accuphase Laboratory, Inc., originally known as Kensonic Laboratory, Inc. It was released in October 1978 and originally priced at ¥250,000. The T-104 features a frequency synthesizer system with quartz lock for precise tuning across 76.1 MHz to 89.9 MHz in 100 kHz steps. It includes a memory tuning function that stores up to four stations for one-touch recall, with tuning data preserved by a built-in nickel-cadmium battery that lasts about one year without power and recharges automatically when powered on.

Design

The T-104 uses a frequency synthesizer system with a crystal oscillator, program divider, and PLL circuit to electronically control the front end via a varactor element. The front end features a two-stage double-tuning system with local oscillation tuning and a tuning buffer. The IF circuit combines a surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter and an LC filter, with two selectivity modes: Normal (low distortion) and Narrow (high selectivity). Stereo demodulation employs a PLL demodulator with pilot carrier suppression. A built-in 4-bit micro-computer manages frequency calculation and memory control. The tuner includes an S-meter and modulation depth meter, with multipath detection on the S-meter via push switch. The "Tuned" and "Stereo" indicators display tuning status and stereo reception. It features a pulse tuning function (PAT. PEND) using an infrared generator and light receiver, mimicking rotary knob feel. The unit includes a noise filter, monaural mode switch, muting switch, dimmer switch, and two outputs—one with front-panel level control. A remote station selector with a 5-meter cord is included. The chassis is housed in a natural rosewood cabinet, with an optional rosewood cabinet also available.

Market

Market prices for the T-104 vary significantly based on condition, ranging from ¥100 for non-working units to ¥86,182 for tested, functional systems. Listings often include a remote control as an accessory. Some units are sold as "junk" or "for parts," indicating that operational condition strongly affects value.
