Accuphase E-305V (1991)

Integrated stereo pre-main amplifier released in November 1991, combining high-power output with refined analog signal handling and remote-controlled precision.

Overview

The Accuphase E-305V is an integrated stereo pre-main amplifier manufactured by Accuphase Laboratory, Inc. and released in November 1991. Based on the earlier E-305 model, it was refined for improved performance, featuring separate preamp and power amplifier sections that can be used independently via dedicated input/output terminals. It includes eight inputs and two tape recorder outputs, with balanced inputs available for CD and Line sources. The unit supports bi-wiring through an A+B speaker connection mode and allows switching between two speaker pairs.

Design

The E-305V uses N-channel and P-channel power MOS FETs in parallel (three each) in the output stage, driven by a cascode-connected driver stage. The preamp employs Accuphase’s complementary push-pull circuit with cascode-connected input FETs. All analog stages are directly coupled, with DC drift suppressed via strong DC servo stabilization. The volume regulator uses a rotating resistor with fixed brushes, reducing metal joints from five to three, and includes a motorized gear mechanism for remote control. Signal switching uses nitrogen-filled, gold-plated relays with twin crossbar contacts. The tone control uses an additive active filter design derived from professional graphic equalizers, allowing the original signal to pass unaltered while adding corrective components. The preamp and power amp have independent power supplies and constant voltage circuits to prevent interference. Electrostatic and electromagnetic coupling are minimized through optimized internal layout. The MC input uses a differential low-noise circuit with a narrow NFB loop, while the MM input uses FETs to maintain high input impedance across the frequency range.

Context

The E-305V is a refined version of the 1980s E-305 integrated amplifier, which improved upon the E-202 design with better power supplies and Class A circuitry. This model continues that lineage with enhanced dynamics and remote-controlled operation.
