JBL 123A

12" (30cm) Woofer / Low Frequency Transducer
Professional / Consumer Series

General Description

The JBL 123A is a 12-inch (300mm) cone-type woofer featuring an Alnico V magnet structure, edgewound aluminum ribbon voice coil, and JBL's proprietary aqua-pus cone treatment. Designed for high-efficiency bass reproduction in both professional studio monitors and high-fidelity consumer systems, the 123A delivers the dynamic, uncompressed sound that defined the "West Coast Sound" of the 1970s.

Key Features

Alnico V Magnet: Premium aluminum-nickel-cobalt magnet provides exceptional transient response, flux stability, and resistance to demagnetization. The 123A's Alnico structure contributes to its characteristic "fast" sound and excellent dynamic range.

Edgewound Voice Coil: The 3-inch diameter voice coil uses aluminum ribbon wire wound on edge, maximizing conductor density in the magnetic gap. This design improves heat dissipation, increases power handling, and reduces compression compared to conventional round-wire coils.

Aqua-Pus Coating: JBL's proprietary cone treatment adds mass and damping to the paper cone, optimizing the piston range and reducing breakup modes for cleaner mid-bass performance.

Accordion Surround: Fabric surround with accordion pleats provides controlled compliance and excellent long-term durability. The accordion design allows for greater excursion while maintaining linearity.

Cast Aluminum Frame: Rigid die-cast frame construction minimizes resonances and provides stable mounting for the motor structure and suspension components.

Applications

Historical Context

The 123A was developed from JBL's professional monitor lineage, specifically the 2213 woofer used in the 4310 studio monitor. When JBL decided to create a consumer version of their successful studio monitor (which became the L100 Century), the 123A was the natural choice for the woofer.

The L100 Century became the best-selling speaker in JBL history, with over 1 million units sold during its production run. The combination of high sensitivity (91 dB), powerful Alnico magnet, and refined cone treatment made the 123A ideal for the dynamic, uncompressed sound that characterized the "West Coast Sound" — a sonic signature that emphasized transient accuracy and low distortion over the more colored sound of East Coast competitors.

The distinctive white cone with aqua-pus treatment became an iconic visual signature of the L100 and remains highly sought after by vintage audio enthusiasts today.

Related Drivers

122A: Successor model featuring a mass control ring for extended low-frequency response and improved power handling.

128H: Ferrite magnet successor with similar performance characteristics but using ceramic magnet material instead of Alnico.

2213H: Professional version used in studio monitors, nearly identical to the 123A.

Maintenance Notes

The accordion fabric surround on the 123A is generally very durable, but after 40+ years may require inspection for deterioration. The Alnico magnet structure does not suffer from demagnetization under normal use but should be protected from physical shock. Replacement cones and refoam kits are available from specialty suppliers.
